Craft gin

Craft Gin from Switzerland

Craft does not mean small for smallness’ sake. It means: every batch is set up, distilled, tasted and bottled by the same hands — in our case in Raron in the Valais.

What craft really means

Between an industrial distillery and a craft distillery lies one fundamental difference: the feedback loop. Whoever macerates, distils and tastes personally can taste every decision — and correct it in the next batch. That learning loop is the real craft, and it only works when volumes stay manageable.

Craft at Johann Gin

For us that means concretely: Valais wine as the base, botanicals from the region, a copper pot still and two people — Robin and Prisca Salzmann — accountable for every step. The result: three gins allowed to evolve each year instead of tasting the same forever.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is “craft gin” a protected term?

No — which is why it pays to look behind the label: who distils where, on what base, in what quantities? With us the answers are public.

Does every batch taste the same?

Almost — small variations belong to the craft and to the nature of the ingredients. We see that as honesty, not a flaw.

Can I visit the production?

Yes — at a tasting in Raron we show the still, the botanicals and the process. Requests via the tastings page.
